Nick settled himself at the table in the corner, quickly scanning his surroundings. The bar was only half lit, the big screen mounted on the wall at the end of a gleaming wood counter showing a sports game. A row of men sat in front of it, cheering and cursing depending on players’ moves and their own affiliations. Nick watched them for a moment before gazing at other occupants of the bar. He didn’t think this was a Pure Humans bar, but it clearly wasn’t a shifter hangout either. The known ones were now popular among a thrill-seeking crowd excited to be mixing with shifters. The walls of this establishment were exposed brick, and tables were small and round. Overall, it was a decent-looking place, if a little shabby. What struck Nick most was that the majority of people, presumably regulars, were preoccupied with their own drinks or conversations. He’d barely garnered a curious glance when he entered.

He carefully shifted his chair so the group of people at the table to the left of him hid him from the view of any casual observer. However, while he couldn’t be seen, he could see and track almost everyone inside. The room wasn’t overly big, and the mood of the guests was relatively sedate. With his shifter-enhanced senses, he ought to have no problems listening to conversations anywhere in the bar from where he was sitting, which was his goal.

A tired-looking waitress came up to him, not bothering to look at his face.

“What can I get you?” she asked, pen poised on the pad.

“Whatever is on draft,” Nick replied, keeping his voice low and trying to look as casual as possible. She nodded like it was what she expected and went to get his drink. Nick slouched in his seat. He wanted to blend into his surroundings, just another guy in for a drink and little relaxation after finishing his job.

The beer wasn’t half bad, he concluded once it arrived and he took a sip. He pretended to look at the screen, feigning interest in the game.

It was only a stroke of luck that led to him finding out this was where Murdock was supposed to meet with Marc, one of the men the chief had assigned to the Squad. He’d decided to follow up and see what he could sniff out. His interest was piqued by their choice of bar. In the time he’d spent watching them unobtrusively, he’d found out this wasn’t the place they usually frequented, or close to their respective neighborhoods. As to that, they could have easily talked at the precinct. They wanted to meet somewhere where they wouldn’t be recognized. Nick wondered why, and he was prepared to wait.

When finally they entered, he hunched his shoulders and stared at his beer like it held all the answers in the world. He waited before sneaking another glance at them then followed the waitress’s progress. He checked his watch, assuming they would wait until they were sure they wouldn’t be disturbed to talk about anything relevant.
